My Grandfather served as a Private First Class in the 343 Infantry Regiment, 86th Infantry Division of the US Army during WWII. He was killed in action on April 29, 1945 during a battle on the Inn River while his platoon was advancing into Friesing, Germany. He returned fire on about 50 German soldiers while other members of his platoon moved into a better position to drive the enemy away. His Sergeant stated in a letter to my Grandmother that, ‘Manuel kept fighting after he was hit several times. I can say that he was a very brave man and that probably several men owe their life to him.’ He was awarded the Bronze Star and Purple Heart for his service. It is because of men like him that we have the freedoms we have today. As a family, we want to say thank you to all the men and women that have served and are currently serving our nation.
